Who are the creators to follow in 2020?
At the dawn of 2020, we wanted to know which creators to watch closely. In other words, who will be the next Jacquemus , or who will be successful like Marine Serre . Elizabeth von der Goltz, global purchasing director at Net-a-Porter, shares her predictions, and much more.
Let's get straight to the point: for you, who are the creators to follow in 2020?
Elizabeth von der Goltz: If I could only name three, it will undoubtedly be Peter Do , who is only at the start of a long and promising career, Christopher John Roger , who works on a very couture spirit with lots of colors, perfect for the red-carpet, and finally, Gauchère , a very avant-garde brand with an ultra-minimalist and chic vision of tayloring .
What can this new generation bring to the fashion industry?
They think and think in a completely different way compared to previous generations. Today, young designers think their collections over the long term, working especially the cut and the garment in depth, they no longer rely only on a wow effect. The real difference is their ecological awareness and thinking about the product in a more sustainable way. They think globally sustainable , from packaging to sourcing raw materials ... It's wonderful to see what they can do. They are very serious, entirely turned towards work and business. The days of party dressmakers are over (laughs) .
What are, for you, the big changes that await fashion in the years to come?
This is a huge question! But I think it's really our way of consuming and the customer experience that will experience real upheavals. Retailers are going further and further in the experience because the consumer, and especially digital natives , are in demand for unique experiences. The other big challenge for luxury is obviously e-commerce. Twenty years ago, nobody was betting on Net-a-Porter . Today, we are a benchmark for luxury e-shopping. For some, we have achieved the impossible.
What is the secret of a timeless designer?
A signature, something in its creation that makes the pieces immediately recognizable, today as in 20 years.
