With Pina&rsquo;s artistic flair and refined sensibility, the castle took on new life, becoming not only a coveted setting for weddings and private events, but also the home of Cadeaux al Castello &mdash; now among Europe&rsquo;s most enchanting Christmas markets. Tonio, an engineer with a gift for innovation, oversaw the technical revitalization of Limatola and the family&rsquo;s second fortress in Rocca Cilento.&nbsp;

His collaboration with Maestro Beppe Vessicchio led to Gin Orchestra &mdash; a bespoke spirit infused with Mediterranean botanicals and the soul of music itself. Meanwhile, Piera, with her Milanese eye for design and intuitive grasp of the digital world, ensured the castle&rsquo;s narrative resonated with a new, discerning generation. For Tonio and the entire Sgueglia family, the restoration of Castello di Limatola is not merely a business endeavor &mdash; it is a living homage to the vision of the late Stefano Sgueglia, whose dream they now carry forward with unwavering dedication and grace.

Its opulent halls and sweeping courtyards have hosted courtly drama and clandestine romance, echoed with candlelit laughter, and absorbed whispers of the Renaissance. Surrounding it, the landscape &mdash; flanked by the Taburno massif, Mount Maggiore, and the Tifatini mountains &mdash; mirrors the castle&rsquo;s poetic silhouette as dusk descends. But Limatola is not bound by its past. In 2010, a meticulous restoration led by the Sgueglia family gave the site new life. With reverence for its heritage and an eye for contemporary elegance, the family transformed the castle into a refined destination where ancient grandeur meets modern sophistication. Today, Castello di Limatola is more than a boutique hotel or events venue &mdash; it is a sanctuary of beauty and serenity, where every frescoed wall and sunlit terrace evokes a timeless, living Italy.

L'OFFICIEL UK: How did the idea of transforming Castello di Limatola into a luxury hospitality venue come about? TONIO SGUEGLIA: It all began with a dream cherished by my father, architect Stefano Sgueglia. Growing up near Limatola, he had always admired the castle from afar. After years in construction and design, he finally seized the opportunity to purchase and restore it. His vision was deeply heartfelt: to open the doors of what he saw as his home, and welcome guests into a place where love would be the guiding principle. That&rsquo;s why our motto is: Love reigns here.

LOUK: How did you manage to preserve the castle&rsquo;s medieval character while meeting the requirements of modern hospitality? TS: With the utmost care and respect. The restoration was entirely conservative and carried out under the supervision of the Italian Ministry of Culture. The eleven guestrooms available today are all part of the original layout. Some were once servant quarters; others belonged to noblewomen who resided here over the centuries. Each room retains its own soul and story, allowing guests to experience history rather than just observe it.
LOUK: What elements make a stay at the castle truly unique? TS: Above all, it&rsquo;s the authenticity of the place. But more than that, it&rsquo;s the complete experience we offer. Each room tells a tale from another time. We&rsquo;ve created a spa within the ancient halls, and our restaurant, Doremi, serves reinterpretations of local dishes with a refined, modern twist. Guests can also enjoy exclusive experiences, such as private cooking classes or curated visits to the Royal Palace of Caserta&rsquo;s gardens &ndash; thanks to our partnerships with local institutions.

LOUK: How important is gastronomy in your overall offering? TS: Incredibly important. We focus on a cuisine rooted in the local identity, with fresh produce reimagined with sophistication. Everything is done in-house, including the patisserie. We also launched a project with Maestro Peppe Vessicchio, called Orchestra Naturae&nbsp;&ndash; a line of artisanal products including gin, wine, tomatoes and pasta, all cultivated locally and exposed to specific musical frequencies. According to our research, these enhance the products&rsquo; organoleptic qualities.
LOUK: How does the guest experience differ across the seasons? TS: Each season offers its own enchantment. Spring is the ideal time to immerse oneself in the blossoming landscape and enjoy the spa. Summer brings the addition of our outdoor pool, perfect for those seeking total relaxation. But winter holds a particular magic, thanks to our celebrated Christmas markets, now in their 15th year and recognised by several European publications as among the best on the continent.
LOUK: What type of guests do you usually welcome? TS: Our clientele is quite diverse. Many Italians, of course, but also a significant number of British and American guests. More recently, we&rsquo;ve seen a growing interest from South Korean visitors. I believe the message of love and warmth we convey transcends borders.

LOUK: Castello di Limatola is also a wedding destination. What services do you offer for such events? TS: We now operate under a policy whereby the entire castle is reserved exclusively for the wedding party &ndash; ensuring privacy and a seamless experience. We provide a fully bespoke service: from floral design to menu creation, from bespoke stationery to p&acirc;tisserie &ndash; all produced in-house. My mother and sister oversee every detail personally, guiding couples from the initial concept right through to their special day.

LOUK: How would you describe your relationship with the surrounding village of Limatola? TS: The castle stands proudly on a hill, as many medieval strongholds do, overlooking the ancient village. Today, only two other families live here permanently. Recently, we initiated a new project to develop an &ldquo;albergo diffuso&rdquo; &ndash; a form of scattered hospitality. We&rsquo;ve acquired nine historic homes within the village and, beginning this September, will transform them into guest residences, offering a more independent and immersive stay within the heart of the community.
LOUK: Have you hosted any notable guests? TS: Yes, and several have become close friends over the years. Maestro Peppe Vessicchio, for example, is like family &ndash; he was a dear friend of my father&rsquo;s, and our Orchestra Nature project grew out of that friendship. The legendary Carla Fracci often stayed with us during the Christmas season; she found serenity and inspiration here. The Benetton family have also been guests on several occasions. But truly, what we offer is the same to all: a sense of belonging, of being at home, regardless of one&rsquo;s fame.

LOUK: What emotions do you hope to evoke in your guests? TS: We want them to feel transported &ndash; to step into a different era while still enjoying the comforts of the present. We encourage a break from technology, an immersion in beauty, architecture, and stillness. Our father&rsquo;s dream was to create a place where time slows down, where one could simply breathe and connect &ndash; with history, with nature, with themselves. Every detail we preserve or restore is a piece of that story.
LOUK: If you had to describe the essence of the castle in a single phrase? TS: The harmony of love. You sense it in the architectural lines, in the soft textures of the rooms, in the quiet garden spaces. It&rsquo;s an invisible thread that connects everything &ndash; a feeling that you are part of something lasting, beautiful, and real.

The Suite Margherita de Tucziaco, bright and ethereal, glows with soft stucco and wide-arched windows that frame the valley like a painted canvas. The Virginia Gambacorta suite, named for one of the castle&rsquo;s more enigmatic residents, features a dramatic canopy bed and antique furnishings sourced across Campania.

In the Anna Gambacorta suite, gentle ochres and cool blues reflect the natural surroundings, while exposed beams lend a quiet majesty. The Aurelia d&rsquo;Este suite seduces with its dusky rose palette and a fireplace that beckons on autumn evenings. The Caterina Della Ratta suite, perhaps the most regal, boasts walls burnished by candlelight and a private terrace that opens to a horizon seemingly unchanged by time.
